FBI Background Check Details

The NCIC is maintained by the FBI and it is the country’s storehouse of information on criminal justice. The information which is maintained in the NCIC is comprised of criminal records along with the missing persons list and most wanted fugitives. Background checks can be performed by the FBI on request. The database searching is done by the FBI to check an individual’s criminal history. The NCIC contains the records of the crimes that have been committed throughout the country and hence it is a comprehensive source for a background check. A criminal background check is done for government jobs, school enrollment and for other employment purposes.

Information Included in the Records

A FBI background check is the most comprehensive check of all the criminal background checks.  When you conduct a FBI background check you will come across the various criminal charges as well as the arrest records that are available in the database. Apart from these records it also contains records on drug abuse, sex offenses and crimes related to property. There are also records available on misdemeanor and felonies. But the minor offenses such as the misdemeanors are not included in the records and are not highlighted on the FBI background check process.

Fingerprint identification of an individual is recorded soon after that individual is arrested. The authority which arrests the individual obtains the fingerprint and sends it to the NCIC for the sole purpose of generating identification code for that individual. The fingerprint record also plays a vital role in detecting the persons prior arrest records.

Authorization for FBI Background Checks

Most of the background checks are done by the FBI or in some cases by the local law enforcement agencies under the supervision of the FBI for certain employers that request for a FBI background check. It is also mandatory for applying for a government job. For instance, certain departments of the government offices such as the Department of Justice, requires that all its employees be screened by using the FBI background checks.

A background check by the FBI is not only restricted to the government agencies but the same can be done by the FBI for the private companies if the company or the agency is authorized by the state law to obtain reports of the background check done by the FBI as a part of their screening process. But if an agency or a private company is not eligible to get a background check done by the FBI then that company can ask the applicant or an existing employee to get his background check done by the FBI and after he receives the report the individual can send a copy of the report to the company.

There is more than one reason for getting the background check done by the FBI. Most of the adoption agencies across the country which operate internationally, requires its applicants to undergo a FBI background check. The background check also play an important role in pointing out  if the individual on whom the check is performed has any other prior arrest records under  any other state jurisdictions.

If you are really looking forward to obtain your criminal background check from the FBI then you should get your fingerprinting done to get your identity. The Sheriff’s department usually processes requests for the fingerprint identification that are required for conducting background checks. But for getting ones own background check done you need to request for a check by a letter with a fee. The time to process your request can take as much as four weeks.
