Amsterdam Court, New York Information and Location

Amsterdam court is one of the 61 city courts of New York State. Amsterdam Court falls under the judiciary of 4th District and Montgomery County of New York. Amsterdam Court New York hears and tries cases involving small claims up to $5,000 and disputed property of up to $15,000. It also hears the criminal cases of misdemeanors, felonies, and preliminary hearings. Amsterdam Court New York hears cases of traffic and other civil ordinance violations taking place within the boundaries of the city.

 

City and Justice Courts

City, town and village, together they form a cluster which is called Justice Courts. Though the jurisdiction of city is more elaborate than the latter two, town and village courts are counted within the Justice Courts. In most cases, this is the only court the inhabitants of the small cities, towns or villages get to see except for New York City.

Business hours of the court are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Reaching the courthouse is not difficult and public transportation is available on this route. Facilities present in the office follow the Americans with Disabilities Act, so visitors with disability issues can access the main entrance as well as washrooms and telephone facilities on the first floor. Filing fees in city courts are same as district and New York City civil courts. To file, you are asked to pay $45, and if you demand a jury trial, you will be charged $70.
