WV Sex Offender Registry Information

The West Virginia sex offender registry is maintained by the West Virginia State Police. The law for sex offender registration in the state is enumerated in the Sex Offender Registration Act West Virginia State Code §15-12. The law also states that the sex offender information be made available to the public. You can acquire more information about the law of the land from http://www.legis.state.wv.us/WVCODE/code.cfm?chap=15&art=12#12.

West Virginia Sex Offender Information

The information on lifetime registered sex offenders are made available online.  You can also request the authorities for a quarterly mail that will keep you updated about the whereabouts of the offender. Information on sex offenders who are supposed to be registered for a period of more than 10 years is not released to the public. In order to access such information, you need to get an order issued from the local court. As per the statistics available until August 2009, the number of registered offenders in the state is 3300. Of these almost 99% have complied with the laws of the land and there is an active warrant issued against 24 offenders for violation of the statute.

The information available on the website of the West Virginia State Police is more or less accurate as the authorities take all steps to ensure that it is regularly updated by the registry personnel. You may not receive updated information in cases where the data is still being processed or verified by the registry personnel. It may also happen that the offender registered with the state police had shifted base without giving any intimation to local law enforcement authorities. The information collected by the police includes their full name, date of birth, fingerprints, vehicle information, previous address, social security number, the offense committed, the contact details of the probation or the parole officer, telephone number and physical details like eye color, height and weight.

If you come across any information on the WV sex offender registry that is incorrect, then you can immediately inform the law enforcement authorities about the change of information.  You can contact the registry officials by calling 304 746 2133 or send a mail to registry@wvsp.state.wv.us

West Virginia Sex Offender Search

If you are looking to search for sex offenders in West Virginia, then you can browse through the WV sex offender registry by filling out the online form available on http://www.wvstatepolice.com/sexoff/mainsearch_r07.cfm . You need to fill out the form available on the website with details like last name of the offender, the street name, the city and county of residence and also check the boxes that would help you to search the lists of sexual violent predators or wanted offenders.  The offenders who are listed in the category of wanted offenders are the ones who have not complied with W.Va. Code §15-12 et seq.

If you type in a search with the last name of the concerned individual, then the system will throw up results that take into account all sex offenders with identical last names in each of the counties of the state. You can get details regarding their address, race and age.

It is not possible to check the WV sex offender registry on a regular basis. You can register on the website of the state police so that you receive an alert in your mailbox as soon as a sex offender moves into your neighborhood.  You can also search the offender by his or her email address or by their online username.
