Wisconsin Sex Offender List Information

To get Wisconsin sex offender list, you need to access the database of the offenders via the registry system of the state. By law, it became mandatory to create a list of Wisconsin sex offenders accessible to general public in 1997. Post 1997, the list of offenders can be accessed through an automated system. This list holds essential information on the individuals who have been convicted for committing sex crimes and who now live in the state of Wisconsin. The list is maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

Reasons for Accessing the Wisconsin Sex Offender List

This is Wisconsin Act 440 according to which community is notified about the sex offenders of the region. This list can really be of great help if you are moving to another part of the city or town and want to know how safe that area is. Also, if you send your toddler to the day care and you will feel suspicious about the people loitering around. You can also be benefited from Wisconsin sex offender list if you are an employer and presently in hiring mode. It is always better to know about the area or person before you start your deal.

The list features names of only those sex offenders who have been sentenced on or after December 25, 1993 and have completed their sentence, released or on supervision. Any individual who is basically a suspect of a sexual-criminal activity or if the case is still in the court, he or she would not be included in the list.

Ways of Accessing Information

There are two ways to access the Registry in Wisconsin. If you have a computer with Internet connection, go to http://offender.doc.state.wi.us/public/search/search.jsp. You can search the list by name or location. The second way to access the list is the toll free number. You can call 1-800-398-2403 and by providing Victim Identification Number, you can get the whereabouts of the offender. If you don’t have this identification, you must have the full name, birth date and Social Security Number or driving license number.

By rule, on completion of the sentence, sex offenders who have been convicted in this state or sex offenders from other states moving in Wisconsin or plan to stay here for more than seven days must register with this program within ten days. Change is address must also be reported to the current and new jurisdiction authorities. If a sex offender relocates to a different state, it should be notified ten days in advance. For one time offenders, the time frame for registration is annually for fifteen years. For multiple convictions and aggravated sex offenses, registrant needs to register for the rest of the life.

Removal of Records from the Wisconsin Sex Offender List

If some registrant wants his or her name removed or made inactive from Wisconsin sex offender list, there are three ways to do so. Once the term of fifteen years for registration is completed, the name becomes inactive provided registrant does not repeat the act. The record can get expunged if the registrant applies for it and the application is approved the Department of Correction. Third and the last way is death. If a registrant dies before the completion of the fifteen years term, his or name becomes inactive.
