Tennessee Municipal Court Information and Locations

Tennessee Municipal Court is also known as city court. The municipal courts in Tennessee exercise jurisdiction in all cases that deal with violations of city codes or ordinances. The city courts are empowered to levy a fine that is not more than $50 or a prison term which is less than 30 days in general. But the jurisdiction of the city courts varies from one city to the other. There are 300 cities in the state of Tennessee that have Municipal Courts.

Knoxville City Court

Knoxville City Court deals with violations such as issuing parking tickets, traffic citations, DUI, DWI cases, and violation of environment codes. It also handles cases that involve animal control, cases pertaining to housing and zoning codes, violation of noise regulations, business codes and regulations and codes that deal with personal behavior of the individuals residing in the Knoxville city.

Administrative Functions of the City Court

The administrative functions of the city court include:

•    To understand and put into effect the various city codes
•    Offer judicial services to the general public
•    Create and maintain a quality customer friendly service that helps to instill public faith in the judicial system by providing the general public an easy access to the court

Nashville Municipal Court

The Nashville City Court partners with the local government to ensure the public safety. The city court is a limited jurisdiction court that exercises jurisdiction over matters that deal with civil cases, misdemeanor cases, traffic felony offenses, and the violations of the municipal codes and ordinances.

The various departments of the Municipal Court in Nashville are Probation Department, Environment Court Department, Night Court Department, Mental Health Court Department, and Treatment Court Department.

Probation Department

The Probation Department is responsible for making sure that probationers follow the guidelines and terms ordered by city court. The Probation Department deals with cases involving criminal misdemeanor offenses that carry a short jail sentence or probation term that is less than 11 months and 29 days for each offense committed.

Offenders are required to attend and complete programs and classes such as anger management classes, programs for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, and/or classes on shoplifting. They may be required to do community service, pay compensation to the victims or their families, undergo testing for drugs, and also take part in self-help therapy group sessions.

Environmental Court Department

The Environmental Department of the city court in Nashville was established in 2001. This department addresses issues such as dumping of debris and trash around buildings, neighborhoods, and business areas, cases that deal with public nuisance, complaints about pets, leash law enforcement, and complaints about vicious dogs and strays.
