How to Stop Receiving Telemarketing Calls

Whether fraudulent or genuine, telemarketing calls are disturbing as well as irritating. You can get calls at weird hours when coming from frauds. The Federal Trade Commission has, thus, taken measures which enable the uninterested consumers to stop receiving telemarketing calls. National Do Not Call Registry is one such provision which lets you restrict the unwanted callers so that you do not receive telemarketing calls anymore.

Block Telemarketing Calls

To register your landline or cell phone numbers with this facility, go to https://www.donotcall.gov/register/reg.aspx. You can register with as many as three phone numbers. Enter your email address and then submit the information. A mail from Do Not Call will be sent to your inbox of the email address provided. Open the mail to activate the registry within seventy two hours, otherwise the registry would expire. If the link in the email does not work or the message of ‘Registration Complete’ does not appear, copy or cut the link and paste it in your web browser.

If you do not have Internet access, you can use the toll-free number 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236). Make your call from the numbers which you want to register to stop telemarketing calls. This is a free facility enforced by Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commissions. But, though this registry can bar most of the calls, that does not mean that all calls from the telemarketers would be barred. And most of them are not supposed to call you again if they find your number on registry for consecutive 31 days. As per Do-Not-Call Improvement Act, implemented in February 2008, a number placed on registry remains permanently there.

Often telemarketers block their numbers while calling you. You can also use anonymous call rejection service to avoid these callers. This way, any call from anonymous number does not reach you. It is intercepted and the caller hears an automated voice message that you have provisions for not receive the calls from blocked numbers. This service is provided free of cost and is applicable only if you have Caller ID service as well. However, there is one drawback that since all calls without name and number identification are rejected, you can often miss out some important calls as well.

Call Rejection

To activate anonymous call rejection facility, press *77, irrespective of any telephone or cell phone company. This will prevent the private numbers from calling you, but the unavailable and unknown numbers can still reach you. To deactivate the service, press *87.

If you receive a call from an unwanted caller, then press *60 immediately after hanging up. This will add the particular number in your personal list of blocked callers. This mode to stop telemarketing calls can be used by the consumers who do not have Caller ID service with their telephones.

Apart from all these, there are specific solutions provided by respective telephone companies so that the telemarketers stay away from their consumers. You can call up their helpline number to know about the privacy measures specific to your connection. You can also visit their website to know about these measures.
