Learn About the Rhode Island Area Code Directory

The original plan of the area code system was developed by AT&T and Bell Laboratories. The concept was developed in the 1940s and implemented in 1947. Known as the North American Numbering Plan, the area code system came into effect in the US and Canada. The chief aim of the numbering plan was to systematize the telecommunications network of the area.

The area codes were initially known as numbering plan areas. The US and Canadian states were given one or more area codes depending on certain factors like the population density of the state and the demand for telephone numbers in the specific area. Rhode Island, the smallest state in the USA, was assigned a single area code according to the plan.
