Pennsylvania Area Code Directory Information

Area codes are the first three digits of any ten digit phone number. These digits designate the regions of a particular state which this code serves. There are various telephone exchanges that come under one area code. The three digits following the area code designate these exchanges and the last four digits connect you with the individual you want to talk to. In Pennsylvania area code directory, there are ten area codes that are active and run at full-fledged rate. These codes are 215, 267, 412, 484, 570, 610, 717, 724, 814 and 878.

Area Code 267

This area code came into existence when the first area code 215 had an overlay to disperse the stress of increasing number of subscribers of landline phones, cellular phones and pagers. Counties it serves, along with 215, are Hereford area of Berks County, northern part of Bucks County, extreme south of Lehigh County, eastern part of Montgomery County and Philadelphia County.

Area Code 412

This area code serves almost whole of Allegheny County including Pittsburgh, and little of Washington and Westmoreland Counties. 412 is also one of the first 86 area codes created in 1947.

Area Code 484

Area code 484 came into existence when overlay plan was introduced and implemented upon area code 610 on June 5, 1999. The main cities covered by this code are Ardmore, Drexel Hill, Springfield, Norristown, Pottstown, Bethlehem etc.

Area Code 570

Area code 570 covers north eastern Pennsylvania which includes cities like Scranton, and Wilkes-Barre. It was created on December 5, 1998 when the area code 717 was split.

Area Code 610

Area code 610 was created on January 8, 1994 when it was apprehended that the original area code for the entire south eastern Pennsylvania 215 would be exhausted of all numbers. In 1999, it had an overlay with area code 484. Cities and counties covered by it are same as those of area code 484.

Area Code 717

Area code 717 covers the south central part of Pennsylvania. This number dominates the metropolitan areas of Harrisburg-Lancaster-York belt. 717 is yet another area code that belongs to the category of original codes established in 1947 and had been split once to area code 570 on December 5, 1998.

Area Code 724

This area code was established on February 1, 1998 when area code 412 was split. It serves the western and south western part of Pennsylvania. It is overlaid with area code 878.

Area code 814 covers north western and central Pennsylvania serving the important cities like Erie, Johnstown, Altoona, and State College. This code also belongs to the initial lot of codes created in 1947 and yet has not been split even once, though an overlay or split is on cards in 2012.

Area Code 878

It is an overlay code for 412 and 724 that serve Pittsburgh and southwestern parts of the state. Till July 2009, there had been no numbers with this particular area code.

Apart from these, there is another code in Pennsylvania area code directory. It is area code 835 which was supposed to be an additional overlay code for 610 and 484. However, due to several reasons, the plan was withdrawn in 2005 and the number has been reserved for future use within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Telephone.
