Oregon County Court Information and Location

Any Oregon county court like other county courts in and around the United States of America has several courts under its jurisdiction. The State of Oregon has thirty-six counties. Each of these thirty-six counties has one circuit court. The majority of these counties in Oregon has their offices in the county courthouse. There are a few counties which have their offices and courtrooms in more than one place.

Until January 1998, Oregon had district courts which were the third state trial courts. The district courts had a limited jurisdiction and these courts used to handle small civil cases and petty crimes. After January 15th, 1998 all these district courts combined into the circuit courts.

Judicial Districts of Oregon

Oregon is divided into twenty-seven judicial districts. Each of these judicial districts has one or more counties. The number of judges for each judicial district is determined by state law regarding judges elected in each district and according to the volume of cases and population of these judicial districts.

There are many counties in the state which are relatively small and thus the volume of cases as well as the population are also quite small. The state has combined these smaller counties into multi-county judicial districts. Since January 2007, the state has a total of 173 positions of circuit judges. Courts of Oregon

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the Oregon judicial branch. The Oregon Supreme Court has seven elected chief justices. Each of these seven chief justices serves a term of six years. The state also has a Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals is presided over by one chief justice and nine judges.

The Oregon Tax Court hears cases of tax appeals. The Tax Court has exclusive jurisdiction under the state laws to hear cases that involve property tax, income tax, excise tax, corporate tax, local budget laws, timer tax and limitations of property tax. This court is divided into two divisions. One is the regular division and the other is the magistrate division.
