This area code also serves the coastal region stretching from the California border to the Lincoln County.

It is being considered that area code 541 will run out of numbers by 2011, therefore the Oregon Public Utility Commission is planning a number overlay with Oregon area code 458. The consequence will be mandatory 10-digit dialing for that particular area. Overlay of area code 503 with 971 has already taken place.

Area Code 971

This is an overlay of area code 503 and was created on October 1, 2000. It was a concentrated overlay till 2008, implying that it was existent in some parts of the 503 area code. Currently, area code 971 is a standard overlay. The telephone area codes 503 and 971 serve many locations such as Tillamook, Salem, Portland, Astoria, McMinnville and several other places in northwestern Oregon.

This area code was added for sharing the service area with area code 503, the exceptions being Clatsop and Tillamook counties. It is to be noted that the visibility of area code 971 is lower than what was expected; certain businesses in the 503/971 overlay still advertise only seven-digit numbers instead of 10-digit phone numbers following the overlay.

The Oregon Area Code 458
