North Dakota Area Code Directory Details

North Dakota, the 19th largest state by area in the United States is located in the Midwestern region of United States of America. When the telephone companies first started with the new numbering system many years back, they divided different areas of the nation into a three digit area code. In the beginning there were 999 of these codes accessible though all was not used up at that time.

Each locality of the country was assigned an area code and at times multiple ones. Modern calls are routed with the help of Area codes. It is a three digit prefix that corresponds to a particular location and acts as an indication to the telephone service provider as to where a call needs to be directed. These codes are also essential since with three digits being added to the main number increases the phone combinations considerably. In fact in many circumstances when populated parts of any country fall short of phone number unions the first thing that is done is inception of a new code.

Area Code 701

Based on the number of inhabitants of a part or area of a nation an area code can differ in scope from an entire state to a segment of a metropolis or community. North Dakota has one area code as of now whereas there are populous states where more than one area code is used and being operated upon. Both California and Texas are good examples of such kinds of cities where many area codes are already present. The majority of the states in United States have three to ten area codes.

701 is the Area code of North Dakota that is used to address long distance calls to and from the state and is covered under the North American Numbering Plan. This area code was created by AT&T in 1947 and is stilled referred to the entire state. The area code 701 is divided between the Fargo Brainerd LATA and the Bismarck LATA. It is also the only area code in North American system that has been broken in two LATAs.

This code 701 is almost half occupied with almost 500 exchanges by now in use amongst 800, which are theoretically possible. Hence negotiations are in progress for an impending rip or overlay of North Dakota connecting area code 701 and a new area code for a time in 2010 and 2011.
