Michigan Area Code Directory Information

The state of Michigan received three area codes in 1947 when the original system of denoting specific area codes according to the geographical location was formulated. The population as well as the number of subscribers increased with each passing year leading to an exhaustion of the availability of the telephone numbers. The Michigan Area Code Directory has the details of twelve listed area codes of the region at present.

 

Area Code 231:

 

This particular code was created in 1999 when the original code was 616 was exhausted completely. The area code 231 now covers the entire northern part of the region which was served by 616 previously. 231 currently covers 139 cities including Cadillac, Grant and Traverse City and Big Rapids. A total number of 26 counties come under the coverage of 465 telephone exchanges within the area code of 231.

 

Area Code 248:

 

The entire area of Greater Detroit is served by the area code 248. Northville as well as the Northville Township along with the entire Oakland County comes within the coverage of the code too. The 697 telephone exchanges within the area code 248 also serves 9 counties which encompasses a total of 69 counties in the state of Michigan.

 

Area Code 269:

 

This particular area code was created in 2002 after splitting from the original code 616. Battle Creek, Allegan, Sturgis and Marshall are some of the better known cities served by this code. 73 cities belonging to 10 counties of the southwest province of Michigan are covered by the area code 269. The lower part of the Southern peninsula has a total of 395 exchanges in the region. A third of the area under the coverage of the original area code 616 is now served by 269 as well.

 

Area Code 313:

 

One of the original area codes of the state, 313 served the entire area of metro Detroit as well as the town of Flint and Thumb region. However, the rapid proliferation of cell phones as well as fax facilities led to the subdivision of the area codes. At present the area code serves 9 counties as well as 47 cities within the same geographical location. The city of Detroit is also partially covered by the area code of 313.

 

Area Code 517:

 

The area code 517 covers a substantial portion of the central part of Michigan peninsula. Lansing, Howell, Jackson, Hillsdale and Adrian are some of the important cities that come under the coverage of the area code 517. The entire region is served by 516 telephone exchanges which encompasses 17 counties and 110 cities of the state of Michigan.

 

Area Code 586:

 

The area code 586 serves 8 different counties located in the metro Detroit area of the state.  Macomb County is one of the more prominent counties served by the area code as well. Several townships like the Clinton charter Township and Shelby Charter Township also come under the coverage of the area code as well. 383 telephone exchanges serve a total of 60 cities of the region including a portion of the city of Detroit.

 

Area Code 616:

 

This area code originally served the entire lower western part of Michigan when it was implemented for the first time in 1947. After the rapid growth of the region the area code has been split three times in order to accommodate all the subscribers residing in the area. The metropolitan areas of Grand Rapids, Holland and Wyoming are now the only prominent regions that comes under the coverage of 616. The area code also includes 66 cities located within the 17 counties served by it.

 

Area Code 734:

 

Washtenaw and Monroe counties are among the list of 9 counties that are covered by the area code 734. Both the east and west parts of Wayne County are also included within its area of coverage. Ann Arbor, Canton and Rockwood are a few of the 67 cities served by the code 734.

 

Area Code 810:

 

810 is the common area code that serves all cell phones in Livingston County of lower Michigan. The area code also covers 12 other counties as well as 99 cities of the region. 417 telephone exchanges of the state help in connecting the subscribers belonging to the region.

 

Area Code 906:

 

The area code 906 was created back in 1961 when a particular part of Michigan (northern portion of the state) was threatening to become a part of the State of Wisconsin or form a new state. It is one of the least populous area codes in the entire state of Michigan serving only about 320,000 people. The code covers 19 counties and 140 cities at present which includes Menominee, Ishpeming and Houghton.

 

Area Code 947:

 

This particular area code serves Oakland County which lies to the north of Detroit City. 947 is closely connected with the area code of 248 as it was overlaid with the area in the year 2002.  Clarkston, Southfield, Milford and Ortonville are the only cities that come under the coverage of the area code 947. 68 telephone exchanges currently serve the area covered by 947.

 

Area Code 989:

 

This area code has the highest number of subscribers in the entire state of Michigan. 612 telephone exchanges serve a total of 204 cities located within 35 counties of the state. The central part of Michigan along with north eastern part of lower Michigan as well as a part of the Thumbs region also come under the coverage of the area code.  Alma, Bay City, Saginaw and Mt. Pleasant are a few of the important cities covered by the area code 989.  This area code has an additional function too. It is used for sending telex messages to Marine City of Michigan State.
