Kansas Area Code Directory Information

The State of Kansas had received two area code numbers under the initial North American Numbering Plan of 1946. The plan was implemented the very next year when the northern part of the state came under the coverage of area code 913. The southern states were assigned the code of 316 with three of the largest metropolis the Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka lying in the eastern region of the state.

The Kansas area code directory contained the two prominent area codes for a long period of about 40 years until the two codes were split into four in the late nineties largely due to a rapid population explosion in the state. The huge number of cell phones also contributed to the cause as did the deregulation due to the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Area Code 316

The area code 316 was one of the original codes assigned to Kansas and had formed a part of all telephone numbers belonging to the southern part of the state. The prominent cities of the region include Newton, El Dorado, Colwich and Andover. These cities are still served by the same area code. The city of Wichita is another important landmark which can be reached by prefixing the specific telephone number with this area code. A total of 8 counties and 42 cities are covered by the code 316 which also has 256 telephone exchanges attributed to it.

Area Code 620

A rapid escalation of cell phone calls made it impossible for the original area code of 316 to serve the entire southern part of the state. The newly formed area code of 620 thus came into service in the year 2000. As a result a majority of the southern Kansas apart from the city of Wichita came to be covered by the new area code of 620. This area code covers 62 counties which includes a total of 275 cities of the state as well. Hutchinson and Dodge City are some of the more famous cities within area code 620 which also has 574 telephone exchanges within its area of coverage.

Area Code 785

Most of the northern part of the state of Kansas is served by the area code 785. Although the area covered by 785 stretches all the way from Colorado in the east to the state of Missouri in the west, it excludes the huge metropolitan area of Kansas City. The state capital of Topeka is one of the more prominent cities to be served by this code. Auburn, Salina, Manhattan and Lawrence are a few of the other important cities that are covered by the area code of 785. A total of 305 cities lying within the geographical boundaries of 63 counties come under the coverage area of the code 785. The telephone calls for the entire region are handled by the 603 telephone exchanges located within the area.

Area Code 913

This area code was one of the two original codes assigned to the state of Kansas. Initially the total area of coverage for the area code 913 encompassed the entire geographical region between the state borders of Colorado and Missouri. The area has been redefined after the introduction of two new area codes and is now limited to the Kansas City metropolitan area which contains 360 telephone exchanges.

The area code of 913 could be used for long distance call even by the subscribers residing within the coverage area of 785 for a period of one year from 1997 to 1998. Later on, the dialing of 785 became a necessity for all long distance callers residing in the area served by 785. Shawnee, Atchison, Lansing and Kansas City are a few of the more important cities served by the code 913. 19 counties consisting of 60 cities of the state of Kansas are covered by the area code of 913 as well.
