Georgia Area Code Directory Information

The area code system was designed way back in 1940s by the AT & T along with Bell laboratory and was implemented in 1947 in the states of North America as well as Canada.  The original 86 area codes were increased as the population continued to grow all across the United States of America. The area code is normally limited to a single state with most of the states being covered by multiple area codes as well. The Georgia Area Code Directory consists of 8 different area codes with each of them being designated to a specific region of the state.  This makes it easier to locate the area of the telephone call.

Area Code 229

The North American Area telephone code covers a part of the south western region of Georgia. The code covers a total of 39 counties and 113 cities of Georgia and includes 470 telephone exchanges within the state. The region was originally served by the area code 912 which was split into area codes 229 and 478 in the year 2000. Albany, Americus, Bainbridge and Valdosta are some of the prominent cities covered by the area code 229.

Area Code 404

This area code serves 47 cities and 17 counties in the state of Georgia. The State capital of Atlanta is covered by the area code 404 as well. This code was the original state area code and encompassed the entire state of Georgia back in 1951. However, different area codes were created for different regions of the state soon after and large parts of southern and central Georgia were brought under a new area code. However, a few of the areas again came under the area code 404 after complaints of being alienated were received from the commuter towns of the state. Since then this particular area code comprising of 674 telephone exchanges forms the largest toll free telephonic call zone of the world.

Area Code 478

The area code of 478 covers a total of 32 counties which includes Macon along with the central regions of Georgia. 84 cities come under this area code at present and encompasses 319 telephone exchanges within its local area. The area code 478 was created in the year 2000 when it split from the original area code 912. East Dublin, Dudley, Warner Robins and Wrightsville are a few of the prominent cities covered by the code 478.

Area Code 678

The metropolis of Atlanta together with its suburbs and commuter towns has been assigned the area code of 678 by the North American Numbering Plan code. The history of this particular area code is interesting as it was initially assigned to the new subscribers who had signed up for a new telephone service on the 15th of January 1998. The area code is actually an overlay of the codes 404 and 707 and serves the northern suburbs of Atlanta which includes the cities of Cummings, Marietta and Alpharetta. The area code covers a total of 119 cities as well as 36 counties in the state. The huge area served by this area code has 716 telephone exchanges contained within it.

Area Code 706

The area code 706 together with the code 762 serves almost all of north Georgia which lies outside the metro Atlanta area. The entire area served by it contains Rome in the North West region of Georgia and the city of Dahlonega in the east. The cities of Toccoa, Athens and Augusta are also covered by the area code 706. While the area code 706 has 767 telephone exchanges at present although it is interesting to note that the area code 706 had served certain areas of Mexico back in 1990.

Area Code 762

762 area code deserves a special mention as it was implemented by the Georgia Public Service Commission in June 2005. It was introduced as the telephone numbers assigned to the area code 706 were almost exhausted and was overlaid with the new code of 762. The special 10 digit dialing was also introduced in the areas served by the area code 762. At present the area code serves only 6 cities and has 11 telephone exchanges within it.

Area Code 770

The area code of 770 was originally assigned to the metropolis area of Atlanta including the suburbs and commuter towns of the capital city. However, the area code is now reserved for the regions outside the Interstate 285. The area code has since then been overlaid by the code 678. The code encompasses 39 counties which includes 113 cities and 774 telephone exchanges of the region.
