Delaware Area Code Directory Information

The telephone numbers in America consists of 10 digits which include the first three digits as an area code, then the next three digits is the prefix and the last four digits is the line number. Each and every part of the telephone number is important. Area code plays a very important role in identifying a specific geographical area, like a city or a part of the state. As per the recent reports, there are 215 area codes in operation all over the United States.

The area codes are maintained and regulated by the FCC or the Federal Communications Commissions and it came under the jurisdiction of FCC in the year 1996. Both the state and federal regulators also takes part in managing the area codes under the supervision of FCC. When the FCC faces number administration issues, they get proposals from the NANC or the North American Numbering Council, which is an advisory division formed out of state regulators, consumer advocates and participants from the industry.

The area of Delaware falls under the areas that are served by the NANP and are divided into small Numbering Plan Areas also known as the NPAs.  Each of these areas is identified by a three digit NPA code and these three digit codes are commonly known as area codes.

The NANPA provides various NPA reports and these reports include identification of geographic area codes and non-geographic area codes. In addition, the NPA report also identifies the area codes which are no more in service.

The NANPA format for an area code is NXX, where N stands for any digit 2 through 9 and X is any digit 0 through 9. When area codes first initialized, the middle digit of the area code had to be 0 or 1. But this restriction was removed in 1995 and additional combination of area codes became available. The NXX format includes 800 possible combinations. Out of these 800 possible combinations some are not available and others have been reserved for special purposes.
