If you want to find out the sex offenders in your area and also want to find out if your name figures on the list of sex offenders, the process is not that difficult. You just have to go through the website of Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is http://sor.state.co.us/index.cfm?SOR=home.home and get the names of all convicted sex offenders in your state after filling up a request form.

Offenders Required to Register

The state of Colorado sex offender registration form is available on www.courts.state.co.us; the form comes with all the instructions asking sex offenders to register. A sex offender is any person who is guilty of sexual assault and exploitation of children, unlawful sexual contact, indecent exposure and other sexual offenses.

Judges, Department of Corrections, law enforcement, community corrections, staff at county jails and Department of Human Services, as well as probation and parole officers send a notification to sex offenders for registration.  The registration must be made under all the names that have been used by the sex offenders.

Location for Registration

All sex offenders are required to register at the law enforcement agency in his/her jurisdiction. In case the offender in a town or corporate limits of a city, he/she can register at the police department. If the person lives outside city and town limits, then he/she should register at the county sheriff's department. It is also essential for sex offenders who have residences in several jurisdictions to register at all the places.

The sex offenders need to register with the local law enforcement agency during business hours. The registration needs to be completed in just 5 business days of becoming permanent or temporary resident of Colorado, or in 5 business days of being released into the community under the criminal justice supervision.

Other Pointers for Registration

Re-registration is important when a sex offender legally changes his/her name. In case the sex offender shifts base, then he/she must cancel the registration where he/she used to live and re-register in 5 days of with the law enforcement agency where he/she moved to.

Information like the sex offender’s name, address, date of birth, aliases of the sex offender and photographs will be released to the people of Colorado for the purpose of public safety.

Failure to register complying with any registration requirements will put the sex offender at a risk of being charged with criminal offense of ‘Failure to Register as a Sex Offender’; this can be charged as a felony.

Requesting the List of Registrants

Any person living in Colorado can request a list of sex offenders’ names from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation personally or through mail. The person requesting information on the sex offenders must be able to show appropriate identification and needs to fill a request form.  The CBI can charge reasonable fees for searching, extracting and copying the information that was requested. Remember, information regarding sexually exploited victims of Colorado is not provided in this case.
