The Arkansas area code directory contains three prominent area codes which cover all the seventy five counties of the state.

Area Code 501

501 was the original area code for the entire state of Arkansas. New area codes for the state became necessary as the number of subscribers grew along with a significant increase in the population of Arkansas. The area code 501 now covers only the central region of the state consisting of a total of 23 counties and 113 cities. Although the area is multi ethnic in demography, the majority of the population is white. The capital city of Little Rock is covered by the area code 501 too. The city is also the most populous one in the state of Arkansas. 39 different zip codes are unified by a single area code of 501 here. Although a majority of the population is white, there is a significant number of Hispanics as well as black Americans residing here as well. The city of Little Rock has 225 telephone exchanges and you need to prefix the NXX number with the area code of 501 before dialing the subscriber specific telephone number.

Area Code 870

This area code was assigned to a part of the state of Arkansas once the original code of 501 proved to be insufficient for serving the entire state. The prominent metropolitan areas of Arkansas are however excluded from the domain of the area code 870. Jonesboro, Pine Bluff and West Memphis are some of the prominent cities to be covered by the area code 870. 688 telephone exchanges located in 375 cities and 64 counties come under this area code and 870 is considered to be the code to cover the largest portion of the state. However, the unassigned numbers for the region are not expected to last beyond the year 2013. The Arkansas Public Service Commission has therefore decided to go in for an additional area code for this part of the state.
