Area code 205 was the original area code to be established in the state in January 1, 1947. Initially this area code covered the entire state of Alabama but later this area code was split several times to form new area codes- 334 in January 5 1995, and area code 256 in March 23, 1998. Area code 334 was formed to cater to the southern part of Alabama State while area code 256 was created to cover the eastern and northern parts of Alabama.

On June 18, 2001, area code 334 was split to create a new area code- 251 to cater to the southwestern region of the Alabama State.
